Despite challenges such as increased production costs and avian influenza outbreaks, EU chicken meat production is expected to remain stable in 2023. Consumption, however, is projected to increase by 1.4% due to chicken's affordability in comparison to other meats. In 2022, chicken meat imports rose by 13% due to demand from the HORECA sector, with expectations for an even greater increase in 2023. However, exports are predicted to decline in 2023 due to avian influenza and the low price of meat from other producing regions. The report also highlights the impact of avian influenza on the poultry sector, particularly in France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Poland, with the H5N1 subtype affecting various poultry species. France is planning to vaccinate domestic ducks from autumn 2023, subject to EU approval.
