Chile, the world's leading exporter of table grapes, is looking to replace the mandatory fumigation of grapes destined for the US market with a new Systems Approach. This approach, proposed by the USDA-APHIS, could enhance the quality and competitiveness of Chilean grapes by allowing them to bypass fumigation, provided that certain phytosanitary conditions are met. To prepare for this change, Chile is setting up two phytosanitary inspection sites in Atacama and Coquimbo regions. These sites will ensure the export of pest-free grapes, aligning with the US import protocols. The article outlines the collaboration between ASOEX, regional governments, and exporting companies to establish these sites, highlighting the significant effort to meet the US requirements and enhance the market competitiveness of northern Chilean grapes.
