In 2020, China permitted the import of 10 new fruits, including Argentinian and Chilean citrus, Brazilian melons, Cambodian mangoes, Dominican avocados, Indonesian dragon fruit, U.S. avocados, blueberries, nectarines, and Zambian blueberries. However, the global COVID-19 pandemic led to a decrease in the rate of new fruit import approvals and overall fruit imports. Despite the pandemic, Cambodia is hopeful to start exporting mangoes to China by April 2021, following the success of banana exports. Chile's citrus export market is expected to diversify after China granted market access to 45 Chilean citrus companies. The U.S., Zambia, and the Dominican Republic have also gained permission to export fruit to China for the first time. China has established 120 designated imported fruit inspection sites across 23 provinces to ensure COVID-19 contamination-free imports.
