China will, starting Tuesday, December 23, impose temporary tariffs of up to 42.7% on certain types of dairy products imported from the European Union following the completion of the first stage of an anti-subsidy investigation. This decision is widely seen as a response to the EU's tariffs on electric vehicles. The tariffs will range from 21.9% to 42.7%, although most companies will pay around 30%, and will apply to milk, cheese, and products with protected geographical indications, such as French roquefort and Italian gorgonzola. The decision on the tariffs is currently temporary and may be revised after the final verdict. In the past, China has already reduced temporary tariffs on pork after completing an investigation, limiting their impact on key producers.
