China, the world's largest pork consumer, has been recovering from a significant setback caused by the African swine fever outbreak in 2018, which led to a surge in pork imports. However, pork imports have since declined due to the restoration of the hog herd, COVID-19, and other factors. The Chinese government is strategically rebuilding the pork industry through structural transformations, the establishment of a national coordination mechanism, and the promotion of technological advancements. This approach aims to ensure national food security, stabilize the pork supply, and combat the African swine fever. The efforts also include importing breeding pigs and working towards becoming self-sufficient in basic breeding resources by 2035. Major Chinese pork producers are investing in research and development to improve technologies and combat ASF, potentially providing opportunities for international collaboration.
