China's COFCO International, led by new CEO Luiz Noto, is expecting an increase in Brazilian soybean and corn harvests for the 2024/25 cycle, positioning the company to become one of the largest grain exporters in the country. The company plans to begin operations for the first phase of a new terminal at the port of Santos, Latin America's largest port, in the first half of 2025, with a capacity of 4.5 million tons that will expand to 14 million tons in 2026. The terminal will primarily ship soybeans and corn, but could also export coffee, sugar, and cotton. Despite challenges like severe drought and excessive rains affecting crop production, Noto believes that Brazilian soybean exports are performing well in 2024, with a notable increase compared to 2023. However, corn exports have seen a decrease due to a smaller harvest and higher domestic demand for ethanol.
