The Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR) in the Philippines has initiated the annual three-month closed fishing season for round scad or galunggong in Northern Palawan, running from November 1, 2024, to January 31, 2025. This conservation measure, now in its ninth year, prohibits the use of certain nets to allow mature fish to reproduce and juveniles to grow, leading to improved fish growth, species resilience, and sustainable population. The results show a notable increase in the percentage of mature galunggong and the average length of the fish, alongside a rise in galunggong production in Palawan. This initiative is crucial for national food security and providing sustainable livelihoods for fisherfolk.
