The article highlights the findings of the 'Together towards local cocoa transformation' project, a collaboration between Côte d’Ivoire and the Netherlands, aimed at enhancing the cocoa industry's fairness and sustainability using systems thinking. The project used a Material Flow Analysis (MFA) to trace the cocoa value chain and identified the Netherlands as a key trade partner, with most added value being captured during the processing of cocoa powder and butter. The Ivorian government's strategy to increase value addition in Côte d’Ivoire by processing 100% of cocoa into paste by 2030 was assessed, revealing potential benefits for the local economy and farmers' living income. However, the analysis also pointed out challenges and suggested the Orange CocoaPro program as a potential solution, which combines the export of cocoa paste with the utilization of waste streams for exportable products. The article underscores the importance of balancing different objectives and trade-offs in achieving a sustainable and fair cocoa industry.
