In January 2024, Peru's exports of deep sea cod to the United States slightly declined by 0.5% in value to $385,625 compared to the same period in 2023, despite a 12.2% increase in the quantity exported, reaching 14,938 kilos. The exports, mainly transported by air to Los Angeles and Miami from Jorge Chávez International Airport, are part of a carefully monitored industry. The Ministry of Production has set the annual catch limit for deepwater cod at 186 tons, with the Peruvian Marine Institute (Imarpe) ensuring sustainable extraction practices. Additionally, the report highlights that toothfish shipments in 2023 amounted to $4.07 million, indicating the economic significance of these fisheries to Peru.
