Colombia: Sugar mango export to the US with growth projection

The sugar mango was exported for the first time to the United States in 2023, offering consumers a different experience due to its antioxidant characteristics, bioactive compounds and high nutritional value. It is important to remember that the origin of the mango is India, and in Colombia it has been known since the time of the conquest; where a natural mutation occurred in the orchards and currently the hilacha, tommy, keitt, yulima and sugar mango varieties are grown. We spoke with the Commercial Coordinator of Asohofrucol (Colombian Horticultural Association), Carolina Vela, who indicated that the United States has shown an increase in mango imports in recent years, “in 2021 and until 2023, mango imports grew by 3.3%, which adds up to about 571 million dollars.” He explained that in 2023 there was a slight decrease compared to the imports that had been generated in 2022.
