Moldova's fruit exports to Russia, its main market, experienced a significant decline in the first half of 2021, with the country falling four positions in the fruit supplier ranking and seeing a 23% decrease in revenue. The export volumes and average prices of key fruits such as apples, table grapes, sweet cherries, and prunes have all dropped, while the export of garden strawberries saw a minor increase. The decline is due to increased competition from fruit suppliers in Iran and Turkey, as well as high-quality local production in Russia. EastFruit analysts predict that the 2021/22 season will be challenging for Moldovan apple producers due to increased production in the region and decreasing demand.
