The National Biosafety Authority of Ghana has approved the commercial release of the genetically modified (GM) cowpea, BT cowpea, developed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the Savanna Agricultural Research Institute. The gene for the GM cowpea was obtained from Monsanto through the African Agricultural Technology Foundation. The accreditation is valid for a period of ten years. The next step will be for field trials to be conducted by SARI, and if approved, the seeds can be marketed. Ghana produces about 57,000 tons of cowpeas per year, with a national consumption of about 169,000 tons, and imports making up the shortfall.
