China has approved two transgenic sugarcane varieties, CTC20Bt and CTC9001Bt, developed in Brazil by the Center for Sugarcane Technology (CTC). These varieties are resistant to the borer pest, potentially reducing annual losses by R$ 5 billion in Brazil. This approval could accelerate the adoption of transgenic sugarcane technology globally, especially in China, which is the largest sugar importer in the world. The CTC has already obtained authorizations for the technology in other markets and has invested significantly in its biotechnology program.
