Farmers in the Mekong Delta have seen a drop in prices for their Japanese purple sweet potatoes due to an oversupply and a stagnant export market, with many struggling with heavy losses. The price fluctuation is due to decreased demand in the Chinese market, which is a major destination for these sweet potatoes, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, local districts are trying to diversify their export markets and encourage farmers to form cooperatives to improve the production-consumption link and increase processing of sweet potato products. Additionally, there are efforts to expand export markets to countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Hong Kong to reduce reliance on China.
