Native to Southeast Asia, Setaria italica, better known as foxtail millet, is a forage grass that presents itself as a good alternative within productive systems. It has rapid growth, water use efficiency, and soil coverage capacity. However, its adoption is not widespread, so INTA researchers are studying how to adjust its management. According to the Institute, foxtail millet is mainly used as deferred pasture due to its agronomic limitations, such as low regrowth capacity and vulnerability to livestock pulling. This is due to its poorly developed root system. Even so, it offers great coverage, making it a good weed suppressor, as long as it does not face competition during establishment.
