(Daejeon=Yonhap News) By Kim So-yeon = A representative of an agricultural corporation who labeled Chinese-sourced red pepper powder as domestically produced and supplied it to schools has been sentenced to prison.
According to the legal community on the 22nd, the 11th Criminal Division of the Daejeon District Court (Presiding Judge Park Woo-geun) sentenced the agricultural corporation representative A to 6 years in prison and a fine of 100 million won for violating the law on origin labeling of agricultural and marine products.
The corporation was also fined 100 million won.
A is charged with manufacturing red pepper powder from Chinese-sourced minced seasoning (commonly known as daechi) and red pepper seeds, and advertising it as if it were made from high-quality peppers grown by domestic farmers, selling a total of 3,615 kg of red pepper powder (worth 57.8 million won).
Among this, approximately 1 ton was supplied as school meal ingredients.
A had previously been sentenced to 2 years of suspended prison and a fine of 10 million won in 2020 for falsely selling Chinese sweet potato starch as domestically produced.
The court stated, "Supplying school meals directly related to students' health and selling to an unspecified number of individual consumers caused severe social damage and impact," and "The defendant repeatedly attempted to destroy evidence from the investigation stage and showed no signs of remorse, being preoccupied with concealing the crime."
It added, "After being detained and prosecuted, the defendant applied for bail claiming no flight risk and even made a pledge, but then fled on the sentencing date," and "Having been criminally punished four times for similar offenses and committing this crime during the suspended sentence period, the defendant shows extremely low legal consciousness, thus imposing a sentence higher than the prosecutor's request."
