The Indonesian fish canning industry is under pressure due to a supply shortage of sardines, driving up prices in the market. The majority of sardines used are locally sourced, but imports from countries like China, India, and Japan are necessary to meet demand. However, these imports are becoming more difficult due to similar supply issues in other countries and increasing logistics costs. As a result, fish canneries have seen a price increase of 10-20% for canned fish products, and producers are reducing production to mitigate financial losses. The Indonesian Fish Canning Association (APIKI) is calling on the government to help identify new sardine sourcing areas and improve the sardine import trade system to simplify the process for businesses.
