The Italian tomato harvest is facing significant challenges due to extreme weather conditions, including drought, record heat, hail, and floods, impacting plant development and leading to risks of sunburn and other issues. These conditions are particularly affecting Puglia and Emilia Romagna, two key regions contributing to the majority of the national harvest. The sector, which has a turnover of 5 billion euros and involves around 7,000 agricultural companies, is dealing with increased costs and uncertainties, with concerns about production declines and the need for supply chain agreements and advanced technologies to improve sustainability and productivity. A collaboration between Coldiretti, Filiera Italia, and Anicav aims to enhance and protect the Italian industrial tomato supply chain by focusing on traceability, transparency, and multi-year contracts, with the goal of providing clear information to consumers and ensuring fair practices for farmers.
