Chile: Drought resistant alfalfa, feed for animals in the southern zone

December 10, 2021.- Researchers predict that climatic conditions will intensify in the coming years and as a consequence Chile is not oblivious to this reality, on the contrary, it is one of the countries that presents the greatest vulnerability to increased temperatures and the decrease in rainfall. Given the impact that is projected for the national forestry sector, the Foundation for Agrarian Innovation (FIA) together with INIA Carillanca, are developing an initiative in the region of La Araucanía, which aims to develop a demonstration farm of 600 m2, with the cultivation of 10 lines of hybrids and two commercial varieties of alfalfa whose characteristic is to be resistant to drought and cultivated in dry conditions. “We know that the availability of water is going to be less and less, therefore, it is necessary to find forage alternatives that help to have food for the animals in these new working conditions.
