Drought in North America and North Africa is causing concerns and driving up the prices of pasta-making durum wheat on the international market. While steady, prices in Italy have seen increases, particularly in Naples and Bari, due to fears of reduced yields from the drought. In Canada, the average spot price for Cwad number 1 at 13% protein in Saskatwan has increased, as has the wholesale purchase price. These increases are partly due to growth in durum wheat area areas, but mostly due to uncertainty about production outcomes from drought risks. The Chicago wheat durum futures index has also seen a slight increase.
