Durum wheat has been a focus in grain production for a number of farms in Dobrudja in recent years. It is sought after not only for its better drought resistance but also because the purchase prices are slightly higher than those of common wheat. At the same time, yields are comparable, explained Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hristo Stoyanov, a breeder from the Dobrudja Agricultural Institute near General Toshevo. A look at the market prices of soft and durum wheat shows a trend of better offers for durum wheat by about 30 to 45%. Demand and price are determined by the higher protein content. According to NSI data for the first quarter of the year, durum wheat was quoted at 420 to 456 BGN/ton. At the same time, the price of soft wheat is gradually collapsing and reaches as early as before the harvest in the summer of 2025 to 346 BGN/ton.
