Ecuador is implementing an action plan to prevent the spread of avian flu to the Galapagos Islands, following outbreaks in the Andean region. The country has created a technical committee and activated surveillance and monitoring measures to ensure the health of wild fauna. Ecuador has also declared a state of animal health emergency and restricted the mobilization of birds and avian products due to the disease. Over 1.1 million birds have been affected in Ecuador, with more than 284,000 culled. A 9-year-old girl has been infected with the flu, likely through contact with infected birds.
