The Netherlands has initiated a pilot program to test two bird flu vaccines at two egg-laying companies. The eggs produced during the trial will be destroyed due to the vaccines not being authorized and concerns from third countries. The first trial will run until December 2025, with initial results expected in March 2024. If successful, the program will expand to several poultry farms in mid-2024. The goal is to understand the practical implementation of vaccination, surveillance, and its trade impact. However, the trade of eggs and poultry meat from vaccinated animals still requires regulation within the EU and third countries.
