The European Commission has introduced new regulations on egg marketing standards across the EU, which include changes to the names of production systems on egg packaging to better inform consumers. These changes include renaming 'eggs from hens raised on the floor' as 'eggs from hens raised loose in the henhouse', and 'eggs from cages' as 'eggs from chickens raised in conditioned cages'. The regulations also allow free-range chicken farms to maintain their commercial name even if birds are confined for over 16 weeks, and permit these farms to host solar panels for increased sustainability. The marking of producer codes on egg shells will now be done at the production farm, unless national authorities allow it to be done at the first packaging center. The regulations do not mention the best before date, as it is no longer required on egg packages, and the selling limit to consumers has been extended from 21 to 28 days, or equal to the best before date for chicken eggs.
