Ethiopia has the potential to harvest over 500,000 tons of honey annually due to its unique production environments and suitable climate, according to Dr. Workneh Ayalew of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe). However, the country is currently only producing a fraction of this, with annual honey production at 60,000 tons and beeswax production at 10,000 tons. To realize this potential, Ethiopia needs to make necessary inputs available, conserve indigenous plant species, allocate suitable harvesting areas, design proper policies, promote market linkages, and ensure integrated pest management. Bees also play a crucial role in pollination for the flower industry, coffee, and other crops.
