Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has launched the country's wheat export operation in the Bale Zone of the Oromiya region, marking a significant milestone in Ethiopia's agricultural goals. This initiative aims to cease the country's reliance on wheat imports and focus on becoming a wheat exporter. The 2022 wheat harvest is expected to satisfy Ethiopia's annual consumption of approximately 97 million centners, with the surplus being prepared for export. This development is seen as a key achievement towards food self-sufficiency and economic growth for Ethiopia.
