Sesame is a crucial cash crop in Ethiopia, being the second most important agricultural commodity after coffee in foreign exchange earning. The country faces challenges in sesame production due to traditional production technology, pests, diseases, climate change, and low expert knowledge. However, there are opportunities such as vast cultivation areas, low labor, and government support. The government is taking steps to improve productivity and develop new varieties. Ethiopia is a significant global exporter of sesame seed, but faces supply and demand side constraints. These include diminishing productivity, pests and diseases, poor access to technology, higher domestic price, and contractual non-performance of export sales. These challenges are threatening Ethiopia's competitiveness in the global sesame seed market.
