The European Union (EU) and the USA have agreed to restart trade in shellfish, such as mussels and oysters, which has been halted for 11 years. The EU Commission has approved legislation for this trade to occur between Spain and the Netherlands and the US states of Washington and Massachusetts. The trade was previously ceased in 2011 due to standard incompatibilities. The EU Commission and the US Food and Drug Administration have been negotiating for the mutual recognition of the production systems of these products. Valdis Dombrovskis, Vice President of the EU Commission, welcomed the agreement, which was achieved as a result of the positive trade agenda with the USA.
