The Netherlands saw total sales of fruit and vegetables across its borders reach €13.1 billion in 2021, with only a fifth of this amount generated by locally produced fruits and vegetables. The country's production value was €3.8 billion, with a quarter to a third of it retained for the domestic market. Import products such as avocados, bananas, and grapes were among the most sold items. The Netherlands has seen a decrease in its role as a hub for global fruit and vegetable re-export to the UK market due to Brexit-related import duties. Germany remained the top export market for Dutch produce, with Italy and Ireland showing the highest growth among other countries. However, the export of Dutch fruits and vegetables to distant destinations faced challenges due to high transport costs, with the export of peppers to the US nearly stopping altogether.
