Natural blue dye accepted by EFSA EFSA conducted a risk assessment of blue galdieria extract, proposed as a new dye, derived from the microalgae Galdieria sulphuraria in various food categories. The analysis concerned the safety of using the ingredient rich in C-phycocyanin (>25%). How was the safety of the technology verified? The assessment was based on the manufacturer's documentation and supplementary data provided in the years 2022 - 2026. The panel also used available toxicological data on spirulina with a similar composition. The analysis included, among other things, 90-day toxicity studies in rats, an assessment of genotoxicity, allergenicity, and dietary exposure modeling based on European consumption data.
