The Kigoma region in Tanzania has seen a significant boost in agricultural productivity among small scale farmers, thanks to the Kigoma Joint Programme (KJP) in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) and 15 other UN agencies. The programme has provided a guaranteed market for farmers, leading to increased production of beans and maize. In 2021, the programme purchased 1,300 tons of beans from farmers, earning them 39 million/-. The programme, which started in 2018 and ends this month, has also seen the price paid for beans rising from 2,000/- to 2,050/- per kilo between the 2020/21 harvest seasons. The government has expressed the need for the programme to be sustained to continue benefiting host communities surrounding the refugee camps.
