A multistate outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg infections linked to whole, fresh onions imported from Chihuahua, Mexico, has been investigated by the FDA, CDC, and state and local partners. The outbreak, which affected 1,040 people across 39 states, Washington D.C., and Puerto Rico, has now been declared over. In response to the outbreak, the FDA implemented enhanced screening for Salmonella in onions imported into the US, and conducted inspections of U.S. importers to ensure compliance with safety standards. The FDA is also working closely with Mexican authorities to investigate the source of the contamination and to implement prevention strategies for the next growing season.
