The Spanish fishing sector, particularly the Mediterranean trawling and longline fleets, is facing a significant threat due to proposed European Union regulations. The proposed regulations include a 7.5% reduction in fishing days and a reduced red shrimp quota, which could jeopardize the profitability of hundreds of boats. This comes after existing cuts have already reduced fishing days by 29%. The situation is further complicated by the impact of Covid-19 and permanent closure areas. The Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food plans to negotiate for revised quotas for other fish species but has rejected the Brussels proposal. The president of the Andalusian Federation of Women in Fisheries warns of the potential disappearance of local fleets if no action is taken.
