The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has reported a preliminary analysis of the total declared area for the 2022 single application of main crops, revealing changes in agricultural trends. The report highlights an increase in the cultivation of summer cereals and grain maize at the expense of vegetables, beans in particular. The vegetable sector faces challenges such as increased cultivation costs, reduced demand, and geopolitical factors. Additionally, the cultivation of potatoes, carrots, onions, and Brussels sprouts is also seeing a decline due to pricing issues and harvest conditions. In contrast, the fruit sector, with a notable decrease in strawberries, shows a slight change in the cultivation of apples and maintains the area for pears. The department emphasizes that these preliminary figures need to be carefully compared due to a methodological change in registration processing.
