Rio Grande do Sul has celebrated two years of being a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)-free zone without vaccination, a status granted by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in 2021. This achievement, marked by extensive surveillance efforts including border control programs, reflects the collective dedication of authorities and the agricultural sector. The status not only opens up potential new international markets for local products but also offers benefits such as improved export conditions, reduced costs, and enhanced market confidence. Chile's recent recognition of Rio Grande do Sul as an FMD-free zone further underscores the region's progress, with expectations of increased exports to countries like China, Philippines, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, and the United States.
