Despite a decrease in emergency aid leading to increased consumption of simple carbohydrates in 2020, consultants Kantar WorldPanel and Nielsen predict a rise in sales value of breads, cookies, and pasta in 2021. The first quarter saw a slowdown in unit sales but an increase in value, especially in health-related bread categories. Brazilian consumers spent 8% more on food and beverages in the first quarter, but bought 5% less in units and decreased purchase frequency by 9%. The bread, pasta, and biscuits industry exported to nearly 100 countries in 2020, with a 15% revenue and 52% volume increase in wheat derivative exports. The sector aims to overcome challenges such as specialization, sustainability, and the perception of Brazilian products in the global market.
