Merchants already offer Christmas items in stores in November, while market stalls appear on the streets with almost unbearable prices. Christmas is perhaps our most intimate holiday, around which a complex ceremony has been built over the centuries. Family members, friends, acquaintances, and colleagues give each other gifts, and everyone sets up a Christmas tree at home. This custom began its conquering journey from 16th-century Germany and was introduced to Hungary in 1824 by Countess Teréz Brunszvik at her property in Martinsvásár. The Christmas market is also a German "invention," with vendors waiting for shoppers in public squares during the four weeks of Advent. It has been recorded that a Striezelmarkt was held in Dresden as early as 1434, named after a braided, yeasted bun (the Striezel) that was preserved. December markets existed before (for example, in Vienna since 1298), but they were more associated with the winter period rather than specifically with Christmas. ...
