The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has warned of a surge in prices of basic food products, attributed to rising electricity costs. In the past six months, 23 basic food items across various categories such as meat, fruits, vegetables, beverages, dairy products, packaged food, drugstore and hygiene products, have experienced price hikes in 14 national chains. The most significant price increases were seen in margarine, pasta, dairy, certain meats, and eggs, with price hikes ranging from 8.3% to 21.2% over the past six months. In contrast, shaving foam, golden apples, and carrots have seen price decreases. OCU attributes these price increases to the significant rise in the costs of electricity and fuel, which are key components in the production, conservation, transport, and distribution of these food products.
