The Association of Pig Breeders in Bulgaria announced the current purchase price of fattened pigs, which is between 3.20 to 3.30 BGN/t without VAT, a price that reflects the current production costs. They predict that pork production in Bulgaria will reach between 80,000 to 82,000 tons by the end of 2024, with a slight increase in purchase price expected due to seasonal demand. However, concerns about potential increases in feed raw material prices loom. The U.S. Department of Agriculture in Kyiv forecasts a decrease in Ukrainian grain exports in the 2024/25 marketing year due to smaller harvests and Black Sea shipping issues. Europe is experiencing a reduction in pig production due to environmental requirements, with most countries reducing herds to self-sufficiency levels. Bulgaria exports about 7,000 tons of pork annually, mainly to Greece and Romania. Additionally, Bulgaria has reported 80 out of 200 cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) in wild pigs, with the virus more active in forests in autumn and winter, and in industrial farms in spring and summer.
