Peru is set to begin exporting donkey meat and derivatives, along with donkey and horse skins to China starting July 1, 2024, following the signing of health protocols between China and Peru. The announcement was made by Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism head, Elizabeth Galdo, after formal requests from China in 2017. However, the country's Foreign Affairs Minister, Javier González Olaechea, clarified that Galdo may not have had the specific information at hand at the time of the announcement, but the initiative falls within China's request. The plan has faced opposition from traders and beef producers who raise concerns about the limited availability of donkeys for export.
