A recall of Enoki mushrooms imported by Sun Hong Foods Inc. from South Korea has been initiated due to a Listeria Monocytogenes outbreak that has resulted in four deaths. The recall was prompted by positive tests for the listeria strain from two samples of the mushrooms by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The outbreak, identified using DNA fingerprinting through whole genome sequencing, has affected 36 people in 17 states, with a high hospitalization rate. The mushrooms were distributed to Asian specialty stores in several states and were sold in clear plastic packs with a green label. Health officials are urging consumers not to consume these mushrooms and are investigating potential links to other mushroom-related illnesses reported since 2016.
