The Sinazongwe District in Zambia is experiencing a maize shortage due to dry spells during the 2022/2023 farming season. In response, the government is promoting community sales of maize through the Food Reserve Agency (FRA) to reduce mealie meal prices and alleviate the shortage. However, the lack of registration of local millers with the Millers Association of Zambia (MAZ) is preventing them from purchasing maize at lower prices from the FRA. The community sales of maize by FRA have been beneficial to many, but there is an appeal for the government to extend the community sales period and for millers to reduce mealie meal prices.
