France has opposed the decision by Ukraine to rename a village, Nadezhdovka, to Champagne, citing it as a violation of international agreements on the protection of geographical indications. The move was approved by the Ukrainian Rada as part of their decommunization policy, but the French Embassy in Ukraine has argued that the name 'champagne' should only be used for products from the French wine region. The protected designation of origin 'Champagne' guarantees compliance with strict production rules and has been recognized since 1936.
