India has resumed exports of broken rice, following a ban due to concerns over declining production, in order to address record high inventories and meet international demand. This decision is expected to benefit poor African countries and Asian feed and ethanol producers. Despite exporting 2 million tonnes of broken rice in 2025, which is less than the 3.9 million tonnes exported in 2022, it is viewed as a positive development for the global rice market. India currently has rice stocks of 67.6 million tonnes, more than three times the government’s target.
