The Municipality of Fundão in Portugal has introduced a regulation to financially support livestock production in the protected landscape of the Gardunha mountain range. This regulation aims to promote extensive grazing and the rearing of indigenous breeds of sheep and goats. Farmers who meet the criteria will receive non-repayable grants, with the value depending on the type of livestock. Additionally, bonus incentives will be given for the milk production from eligible sheep, as long as it is processed in local production units. This regulation is part of the municipality's strategy to enhance indigenous breeds and develop a cheese line, aligned with other support and measures such as protocols with local cheese producers and participation in the European Cheese Network.
