Garlic producers from Spain, Italy, and France, represented by the Garlic Contact group, are seeking greater control from Brussels to prevent the entry of fraudulent Chinese garlic into the European Union. The group is also requesting increased customs control, especially at the Belgian border, to limit the entry of Chinese frozen garlic. The sector is already under pressure due to a significant reduction in planting areas in Spain, especially in Andalucía, as well as drought and phytosanitary issues, leading to a predicted lower harvest this season. The group has raised concerns about alleged irregularities in garlic imports and is calling for more border controls and the possibility of creating a specific Taric code for frozen garlic.
