The National Garlic Table has discovered a fraudulent entry of refrigerated garlic from China into the European Union, leading to lower tariffs and pricing disadvantages for Spanish garlic producers. This fraudulent entry is labeled as 'frozen' garlic, but is actually maintained at lower temperatures. The deception has exacerbated a already challenging situation for Spanish garlic producers, who face a 20% reduction in planting areas due to drought and water access issues in regions like Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha, and a significant increase in production costs. The sector, which spans over 29,000 hectares and produces 286,694 tons of garlic annually in Spain, is seeking support from the Government of Castilla-La Mancha to mitigate these challenges.
