Alberto Garzón, the Minister of Consumer Affairs and federal coordinator of Izquierda Unida, has emphasized the importance of olive oil in the Mediterranean diet and pledged to advocate for its inclusion on the European Commission's labeling. This decision comes in response to a request from the Andalusian Minister of Health, Jesús Aguirre, who suggested the highest rating (A) for extra virgin and virgin olive oil, and the B classification for olive oil, to be placed above rapeseed and walnut oils. Garzón has defended olive oil as a vital component of the Mediterranean diet, which he believes is under threat, and has promised to defend its accreditation in labels at the European Commission level.
