Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology has developed a tool called TroutaPLUS, available on the AquaPLUS platform, to improve the quality and genetic diversity of rainbow trout breeding stocks in Brazil. The tool uses genomic analysis to determine the composition and genetic structure of commercial trout breeding stocks, allowing trout growers to select breeding stock with desired characteristics and prevent mating between closely related animals. The AquaPLUS platform also offers similar genetic tools for tambaqui, vannamei shrimp, and tilapia.

Producers of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), one of the most valued cold water fish, can now count on a tool to improve and guarantee the quality of parent stock, breeding stock and fry. Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (DF) is already offering, through the AquaPLUS platform, the TroutaPLUS, a service that will help in the evaluation of the structure and genetic diversity within and between commercial breeding stocks of this species. The technology was developed with resources from the Research Support Foundation of the Federal District (FAP-DF) and from Embrapa itself. Researcher Alexandre Caetano explains that research on rainbow trout in Brazil, so far, has focused mainly on ecological and historical aspects of the introduction of the species in the country (see table at the end of the article), the economic viability of the productive system, reproductive, health and management aspects. “There was little information about the composition and genetic structure ...
