The Maya octopus from the Yucatan Peninsula has been granted the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), the first fishing indication in Mexico, by the Mexican Institute of Intellectual Property (IMPI). This means the species will be exclusively captured and commercialized by the fishery in Yucatan, Quintana Roo, and Campeche, using sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. The PGI status also limits the capture to a specific coastal area and a particular fishing method, aiming to protect the species and the environment. The Maya octopus is unique for its reproduction patterns and is capable of laying up to 2,000 eggs. The recommendation for the total catch for the 2023 season in the states of Campeche, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo is 21,392 tons.
